Botanic Gardens Open Day 2016

Below is a list of Botanic Gardens and Arboretum, and events held, who took part in the 2016 Open Day.

Australian Capital Territory Australian National Botanic Gardens Art in the Gardens - a 'day retreat' where people, plants and culture meet. Explore the connection between art and nature and practice creative techniques in the beautiful outdoor setting. There will be a variety of opportunities in multiple media to enhance your understanding and appreciation for our native environment plus learn new skills. New South Wales Albury Botanic Gardens The Albury Botanic Gardens will celebrate the Inaugural Botanic Gardens Open Day, with the "Crimson Spider Orchid" adventure and the "Weird and Wonderful" Art Program for kids of all ages. Sunday 29th May, from 12.00noon to 2.30pm in the Children's Garden, surrounded by ancient and majestic plants, dinosaurs and story telling animal seats, wetlands and Giant Bamboo. Bring a picnic lunch and a comfy chair for some fun and games

New South Wales Booderee Botanic Gardens The Gardens will be open 8.00 am till 4.00 pm, and we intend to have bush tucker tours presented by the local Indigenous people who own the Botanic Gardens.

New South Wales North Coast Regional Botanic Garden  
New South Wales Royal Botanic Garden Sydney Music in the Garden 11am - 1pm. We will have entertainment from local musicians and community singing groups. Light snacks and hot drinks will be on sale.  There will be gardening experts on hand to talk about the botanic garden journey and the design of the gardens by internationally renowned firm of Taylor Cullity Lethlean

New South Wales Wollongong Botanic Gardens  
New Zealand Auckland Botanic Gardens Trees, their stories and importance will be the main focus of this open day at Auckland Botanic Gardens. Experts will guide visitors around our tree collections, recommend trees for different uses and situations, and explain their cultural requirements including a tree planting demonstration. This will include ornamental trees and fruit trees for home gardens and the primitive species in our expansive Gondwana Arboretum. Tree photography competitions and children's activities also feature.

Queensland Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens We will be open all day like usual as well as holding a Bushtucker tour, Botanic Garden Tour and the Orchid House will be open from 9am-2pm. A small morning tea will be offered between 9.30-10am.
Queensland Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens

Queensland Maroochy Regional Botanical Garden Autumn Guide Walk - trained volunteers will take the public through the gardens highlighting special plants in flower at the time, with special focus stops at rare and endangered species. The event is free for the public to attend.

Queensland Noosa Botanic Gardens

Autumn Seasonal Guided Walk – Sunday 29th May

9am – 11am

Come and see our beautifully shaped Elephant Apple trees with fruit as large as baseballs and flower as delicate as star jasmine blooms.

Foliage of all hues draw the eye to the layers and levels of our garden plantings.

The latest addition is an authentic heritage post and rain fence framing our Hoop Pine which was a feature near the original homestead on the site.

Note: put on your sunscreen and wear a hat comfortable shoes.

Queensland Redcliffe Botanic Gardens  

Volunteers from Friends of the Redcliffe Botanic Gardens will be present from 10am to 1pm. Volunteers will be in the Nursery, the Herb Garden and the Permaculture area.

Low cost local native plants can be obtained from the Nursery during this time.

Guided tours of the Gardens will be taken by FRBG President David Lergessner at 10am, 11am and 12 noon highlighting the diverse flora of South East Queensland.

The Permaculture gardeners will share Davidson plum cultivation and cordial and the basics of good composting with visitors.

Botanical fibre artist Lesa Hepburn will display plant fibre papermaking and weaving.

Queensland Tondoon Botanic Gardens Gladstone  On the first Sunday in June each year we hold an event here at Tondoon called ecofest, which attracts up to ten thousand people. As this event is only one weekend after Botanic Garden Open Day we would hold our event on the 5th June. We will set up display boards with information on our Botanic Gardens,

South Australia Waite Arboretum Nestled in the foothills, the University of Adelaide’s Waite Arboretum is open daily dawn till dusk.  Come and explore the 30 hectare rain-fed collection of trees from around the world.  Free guided walks will be held at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm and last 1.5 hours, meeting in front of historic Urrbrae House.  Sturdy footwear is advised.   Other features include a labyrinth, sculptures, native bee hotel and thematic artist’s gardens.  Download the free Waite Arboretum app to select a free self-guided walk and learn about the birds and other wildlife in the Arboretum.

Connect with Nature at the Geelong Botanic Gardens Family Day!  Challenge your family on the Discovery Trail, create your own nature art and sniff out some amazing plant smells.  2 pm meet trees over 100 years old on the ‘Tree Stories’ Guided Walk.  Activities from 11 am to 3 pm at the gardens.  3 pm visit the Geelong Gallery to see the stunning exhibition of modern botanic art at the ‘Geelong Botanic Gardens Revealed’ exhibition.  A floor talk at the Gallery at 3 pm will inspire a new way of looking creatively at plants.

 The University of Melbourne 'System Garden. Open 9am - 3pm On the day we will provide tours of the garden that includes general tree & plant information and an historical overview of the System Garden tours 11am & 1pm. 


 'Explore the world of bees with the resident System Garden beekeeper. Learn about bees, their role, biology and diseases affecting bees. Watch bees up close and participate in a simulated hive opening. Ask questions and learn about how you can join a bee club. If you are interested in bees or want to keep bees in your own backyard, this is a “must attend event".' 2 sessions; 10am and 12pm.

 Victoria Wilson Park Botanic Garden, Berwick THERE ARE FOSSILS AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR GARDEN !!! Two major fossil finds in the former basalt quarry, now Wilson Botanic Park Berwick, have uncovered species of plants, many of which are being reintroduced to the site after 25 million years. We invite all to visit and learn of this exciting project, and handle some of the specimens found. Enjoy our picturesque lakes, flora and fauna. Take one of our many walking tracks, play up at the ball park or relax with a book and picnic at Lakeside..
